Carbon electrodes come in many sizes and thicknesses but they essentially feel like a piece of fabric. They are flexible. Graphite electrodes, on the other hand, are not flexible. They are often rod-shaped and feel and look much like pencil lead. Pencil lead is mostly graphite, the difference is mainly one of purity as pencil lead may be partially clay fillers and other things.
What Are Graphite Electrodes?
Graphite electrode uses petroleum coke as aggregate and coal tar pitch as a binder. After a series of processes such as pulverization, batching, kneading, molding, roasting, impregnation, graphitization, and mechanical processing, a high-temperature oxidation-resistant conductive material is prepared. Graphite block is a kind of artificial graphite, and artificial graphite is made by artificial heating of coke products. Generally, if it is purified to make high purity, or carbon fiber, the added value is high. Graphite electrodes are mainly made of petroleum coke and needle coke as raw materials, coal tar pitch as a binder, and are made by calcination, batching, kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization, and machining. It releases electric energy in the form of electric arc in an electric arc furnace. The conductors that heat and melt the charge can be divided into ordinary power, high power and ultra-high power according to their quality indicators. Graphite electrodes mainly include four types of ordinary power graphite electrodes, anti-oxidation coating graphite electrodes, high power graphite electrodes and ultra-high power graphite electrodes.
What Are Carbon Electrodes?
Carbon electrode is a conductive material produced from anthracite and metallurgical coke (sometimes added with a small amount of natural graphite.
Carbon is a good conductor – a key requirement for successful electrolysis. When a carbon electrode is used (normally in the form of graphite), the number of freely moving electrons within the element’s structure results in a highly conductive material. Carbon is also relatively inexpensive to purchase, is stable even at high temperatures and is a tough, durable material.
What are Carbon Electrodes and Graphite Electrodes Used For?
Graphite electrodes sales are mainly used in electric furnace steelmaking, and carbon electrodes are primarily used in electrochemical experiments or electrochemical analysis. In other words, they are used in applications where electron transfer is required and are commonly utilized during electrolysis.
