Why Are Graphite Electrodes Used in Electrolysis?
The main reason for the use of graphite electrodes in electrolysis is that graphite is an excellent conductor. The structure of graphite is such that it has a large number of electrons floating freely between the different atomic layers (graphite bonds are formed by only three of the four electron shell layers of carbon atoms, with the fourth electron being free to move).
